Per la serie “se Skype sui cellulari non arriva, ci pensa qualcun’altro“, mi sono accorto ora che iSkoot ha reso disponibile l’ultima versione del proprio client Skype mobile, lo stesso presente sui telefoni X-Series di 3 (in UK per ora…), unica differenza: usandolo sui nostri telefoni senza un’offerta flat per l’acceso alla rete e senza una partnership tra il nostro operatore e iSkoot ci troveremo a pagare le normali chiamate GSM verso il gateway di iSkoot (che serve a mettervi in contatto con l’utente Skype chiamato… ho spiegato come funziona in questo approfondimento), oltre al traffico dati per attivare la chiamata e aggiornare la lista contatti e l’eventuale tariffa SkypeOut per chiamare telefoni tradizionali e ricevere chiamate. Economicità a parte, la soluzione di iSkoot non è niente male, anche se rispetto a Fring non sfrutta il collegamento dati per trasportare la chiamata e non offre funzionalità instant messaging, eccetto che su alcuni terminali.

La versione per Nokia E61, E62 e N80 temo non sfrutti il collegamento WiFi: non se ne fa menzione sul sito ed è ancora attiva la pagina della private beta iSkootDuo con WiFi e 3G per terminali Nokia E-Series.

A mio parere è un’ottima soluzione per un operatore mobile (attraverso l’iSkoot Partner Program) che voglia offrire questo servizio, un po’ meno per l’utente finale che lo utilizza senza particolari offerte del proprio operatore, anche se non sfruttare la connessione dati per il trasporto della chiamata può forse consentire una migliore qualità audio e l’utilizzo anche da parte di chi non ha una flat dati completa ma una con volume di traffico massimo da non superare (la quantità di dati trasmessi è decisamente minore).

Purtroppo non è compatibile con il mio E60 (!!) su cui non funziona la versione per E61 (probabilmente ottimizzata per lo schermo più ampio)… quindi se qualcuno lo prova ci racconti come funziona!

Skype’s certification of iSkoot is part of the ongoing business relationship between the two companies. Skype and iSkoot also market the application to handset manufacturers and mobile operators, who could offer their customers service packages that include iSkoot.

Initially, the iSkoot client software supports Motorola RAZR phones and Symbian-based mobile phones, but the two companies will continue to work together and expand Skype to many more mobile platforms. iSkoot is available as a free download from www.iskoot.com.
