Google non ci sta e non pagherà i broadband providers statunitensi per avere un accesso “privilegiato” rispetto al resto del traffico sulla rete Internet (questo è quello che hanno richiesto operatori come Verizon e BellSouth).

BellSouth is in talks with some Internet content companies and will levy charges to deliver premium tier services. Bill Smith, chief technology officer at BellSouth told the online publication that, “Higher usage for broadband services drives more costs that we have to recover.”

Jeff Pulver, co-fondatore di Vonage, ideatore di FreeWorldDialup (un network VoIP non commerciale) e CEO di pulver.com, si è a lungo espresso contro le richieste degli operatori statunitensi e ieri aveva proposto che Google sfruttasse il suo “potere di mercato” e boicottasse gli utenti degli operatori in questione (che credo non sarebbero troppo contenti di offrire ai propri clienti un accesso ad Internet senza la possibilità di usare Google).

Oggi Om Malik riporta le affermazioni del portavoce di Google, Barry Schnitt:

Google is not discussing sharing of the costs of broadband networks with any carrier. We believe consumers are already paying to support broadband access to the Internet through subscription fees and, as a result, consumers should have the freedom to use this connection without limitations.

Ma ho idea che la questione non finirà qui.
