Il CEO di Three UK ha confermato l’imminente arrivo di una nuova versione dello Skypephone (S3), pensato come prodotto di massa, in grado di attirare nuovi utenti nella fascia media e bassa. Non aspettiamoci quindi touchscreen o altre feature da smartphone di fascia alta, anche se alcuni ipotizzano l’arrivo di una tastiera QWERTY per facilitare l’uso di instant messaging, e-mail e Facebook. Recentemente Three UK ha annunciato che da maggio offrirà SIM da £1,99 con il servizio Skype e chiamate Skype-to-Skype gratuite incluse.

Per quanto riguarda l’Italia, ieri Tre ha presentato l’INQ1, il “social phone”, con integrate le funzionalità offerte da Facebook, Skype, Twitter, YouTube, Bebo, eBay, Last FM, Microsoft Instant Messenger, Gmail, Google Maps. Per la presentazione si è addirittura scomodato Mark Zuckerberg, founder di Facebook.

Russell stated that the latest Skypephone will be an exciting proposition. The company would provide unlimited Skype usage from their handset for a charge of £1.99 for SIM card, with no top ups or recharges needed.

Mr. Russell also opposed the notion that the freedom given to the customers of bringing their own handsets to the Skype contract would mean the end of Skypephone line. He argued that for heavy users of Skype, only Skypephone handsets work best.

With the new S3 Skypephone, 3 are targeting the mass market rather than the luxury or the class market. The idea behind the new S3 phone is to concentrate on cheap pre-pay handsets rather than compete with other costlier smart-phones such as iPhone or the Google Android.

3 has dismissed the idea of £45 pay per month contracts, instead it would prefer to put forward £60-£80 pre-pay handsets. The S3 Skypephone is priced cheaply at £15 pay per month including the free £10 top-up.

With no features or services compromised in the new S3 phone, and by pricing it cheaply as well, 3 is arguably heading in the right direction by entering the mass market with Skypephone S3.
