Secondo quanto riportato dal sito AllFacebook, alcune stringhe di testo contenute nel codice javascript di Facebook potrebbero fare riferimento ad una funzionalità di videoconferenza con il proprio sistema di instant messaging.

Dopo Google Mail con chat video e voce, anche Facebook potrebbe trovarsi a competere con Skype, forse con modalità simili: ci si attende un client web based che consenta videochiamate direttamente dal browser.

Update: Facebook ha confermato di essere effettivamente al lavoro su una funzionalità di video chat, ma di non avere intenzione di lanciarla in tempi brevi.  “We had been testing a video chat feature, but we have no current plans to launch it to users.”

The code pretty obviously implies that Facebook is preparing to launch a video chat service. So why would Facebook be focused on launching a video chat service? To keep users on the site longer of course! Additionally, Facebook can increasingly become a central hub of communication for many of its users. What’s interesting about these new features is that they compete directly with the features within Google’s Gmail product.
